The taboo around nurturing a girl child has still not faded away. Quite recently, a couple of men attempted to bury a newborn girl child. However, their mission failed as the onlookers informed the police. Well, goodness still exists; The onlookers took charge of the situation and took the right call.

On April 9, almost 40 km away from Chomu, a couple of men came in a jeep with the newborn girl child.

Police, quoting the hospital records, stated that the condition of the girl was stable when admitted. According to police, the men tried to dig in a steep pit at an area near the Chomu town. However, as one of them upheld the baby girl in his arms, the girl started screaming.

The shrieking voice caught the attention of many onlookers, who without any further ado, informed the police about the incident.

“Unidentified people left the infant and managed to flee from the scene. As soon as we were informed our team took the baby and got her admitted to the JK Lon Hospital,” said a senior police officer.

“The infant is very critical for the next 72 hours. She was diagnosed with breathing difficulty when she was admitted to the hospital. Her weight is merely 1.4 kg, that is another concern. And, she is also under shock and hypothermia. We have put her on ventilator support to maintain her blood pressure,” informed Dr Ashok Gupta, superintendent of JK Lon Hosptial.

“Prima facie it appears to be an attempt either by the parents not intending to have a girl child or the family of some single mother. We are looking into the birth records of last three days of nearby nursing homes and hospitals. Whoever is behind the heinous act would be identified and booked under appropriate sections of IPC,” the officer added.

The girl is currently admitted to the JK Lon Hospital where she is on ventilator and under close observation.
