Rajasthan—the state of royal Rajputs, enjoys a colorful, multifaceted culture. The cultural, artistic traditions of Rajasthan reflect social norms, vibrant art and royal architecture of ancient times. Rajasthan is blessed with talented musicians, versatile artists and graceful dancers—something which every Rajasthani is proud of. With the intention to promote Rajasthani arts, crafts and culture, Rajasthan government introduced JKK (Jawahar Kala Kendra). This multi-arts center is located in Pink City Jaipur.

Furnished with an ampi-theatre, closed auditorium, a spacious library, museum, art studio, cafeteria and small hostel, JKK hosts cultural programs and exhibitions to promote Rajasthan at a global scale. Over the years, JKK’s Ravindra Manch has hosted many incredible shows for entertaining the local audience. However, with the changing times, what was once a harbinger of art transformed into a commercial center.

Ever since JKK has collaborated with international agencies and performers, they’ve stage global exhibitions and shows, sidelining local artists in process. In last couple of months they’ve hosted several commercial events of international cadre. A majority of proposals including local carnivals, music, theatre, dance and festivals were turned down by JKK administration. The proposals of Kathak master Girdhari Maharaj and other acclaimed artists/academies like Rajendra Rao, Sashi Saankhla, Lakshmi Narayan Nritya Ashram are still pending.

Many at times, the hall isn’t available for local artists. Many artists have complained regarding JKK promoting foreign artists and big art academies from Delhi, Mumbai and other metropolitan areas. In this process, they’ve ignored the local gentry of Rajasthan, whose files are waiting for approval since last couple of months.

Other than this, the unavailability of JKK director is yet another issue for the artists. The recently appointed director of JKK operates from Delhi and she’s available on phone. Therefore, it’s hard for local artists and officers to meet her for their problems.

Considering all these issues, the government needs to handle this matter with an iron fist. Else Jawahar Kala Kendra will lose its significance to commercialism.
