Helmet Wearing Compulsory in Rajasthan

The Rajasthan government has decided to be more firm and strict to make the helmets compulsory across the state. The state transport department is going to organize large-scale awareness campaigns for helmet wearing. After this, all the two-wheeler and pillion riders will have to strictly follow the helmet rule from December 1, 2017.

Helmet Wearing Compulsory

It’s been two years since the state government had notified about helmet compulsion for riders on October 28, 2015. However, the rule hasn’t been implemented in its true sense. Now the authorities have resorted to other options so as to make everyone aware of the need of helmets. NGOs, traffic wardens, school children, and others have been roped in for these campaigns.

Concerns of Authorities

Rajasthan Transport minister Yunus Khan had asked officials to let the public know through a loud and clear message that helmet compulsion legislation is already in force. It was made compulsory by Supreme Court two years ago but the public is still not taking it seriously.

As per the State Transport Minister, “Time has come when we will have to change their mentality of avoiding wearing helmet as on an average every year 4,000 two-wheeler riders are getting killed on roads while they don’t wear helmets.”

Public Attitude towards Helmet Wearing

It has been pointed out by the state transport minister that people will have to change their habits of holding helmets in their hands and taking narrow lanes to avoid being caught by the traffic police. He stated the fact that if people get murdered, the concerned state or district gets disturbed but nobody cares about the people dying in road accidents.

Awareness Campaign for Helmet Wearing

Reportedly, the district transport officers will be asked to click pictures of accidents where not wearing helmets proved to be fatal. Then these pictures will be used on the signboards so as to make riders realize how important helmets are for their safety.

License Cancellation

The state government is going to cancel 40,000 licenses of those who were caught without helmets. In the coming months, police will start putting a penalty in villages where the public is seen violating the helmet legislation. As of now, the compulsion is only implemented in Jaipur while in rest of the districts; it still needs to be enforced with strictness.
